Books by Sarah Merritt Ryan
Sarah Merritt Ryan is currently working on her first book, a memoir about emotional recovery after psychosis, as well as a book of sonnets about faith in the midst of suffering. Both are written with honesty, clarity, and hope, her book will share what it truly means to rebuild your sense of self after illness and how to find peace, purpose, and joy on the other side of psychosis.
My Soul to Keep
“My Soul to Keep: Faith in the Midst of Suffering Leads to Deliverance and Praise,” Forthcoming in June 2026 with Prolific Pulse Press.
I started writing these sonnets in the midst of the most confounding, unexplainable trial of my life when I was in my mid-twenties, and I did not think I could go on. But I kept writing these poems to prove to myself that I still have a soul, that I still exist while trapped in an inescapable matter. These sonnets are what I take with me from a period of my life that has seemed otherwise wasted to me. They redeem a time in my life otherwise devastating.
Publishing these sonnets is part of why I believe I have survived, and part of what I feel makes my life important. To anyone suffering, I hope I bear witness to story with a light at the end of the tunnel and that there can be meaning to suffering, even when you're in the thick of it.
“Recovery is not just about thinking clearly. It’s about feeling like yourself again.”

Threads of Truth: An Emotional Battle to Move Past Schizophrenia and Want to Be Me Again
My full-length memoir, Threads of Truth: An Emotional Battle to Move Past Schizophrenia and Into a New Life, is my account of how I reached the point of the schizophrenia diagnosis, moment-to-moment accounts of what it is like to have schizophrenia, personal accounts of experiencing stigma, and the gradual process of emotional recovery and still accomplishing my life goals. This book is a story of resilience, survival, and a determination for life dreams to come true.
This memoir is not just about making a full cognitive recovery but also the essential emotional recovery that takes longer and is more elusive, yet essential for quality of life. Many people with this disease face the questions: How do I move on from here? How do I understand what happened to me, and how do I feel about it? Do I tell anyone about what just happened to me? My story not only illustrates schizophrenia—it tells the story of the “regular” person behind the disease, who I was beforehand and my challenges, and how through overcoming schizophrenia I addressed those life challenges for emotional wellbeing, like embracing who I am.
